What Is Agentic Commerce? How Is AI Transforming E-Commerce?

By admin
September 17, 2026

For years, e-commerce has followed a familiar purchasing journey: a user identifies a need, searches on Google, visits different stores, compares products, and eventually makes a purchase.

Artificial intelligence has started to change this process.

Today, a user can simply ask an AI assistant:

“Find me an ergonomic office chair under TRY 10,000 that is suitable for a small home office.”

AI can understand the user’s criteria, research suitable products, compare available options, and increasingly assist with the next stages of the purchasing process.

This emerging e-commerce model is known as Agentic Commerce.

And it is no longer just a concept for the future. Shopify reported that in the first quarter of 2026, AI-driven traffic to stores increased by more than 8x year over year, while orders originating from AI-powered searches grew by approximately 13x.

What Is Agentic Commerce?

Agentic Commerce is a new generation of e-commerce in which AI agents can perform certain stages of the shopping journey on behalf of users.

In traditional e-commerce, users manage almost every step themselves:

Search → Visit Website → Browse Products → Compare → Add to Cart → Purchase

In the Agentic Commerce model, an AI agent can assist with a significant part of this process:

Describe a Need → AI Research → Product Recommendations → Comparison → Purchase

The key shift is that artificial intelligence is moving beyond simply answering questions.

Agentic AI systems can perform specific tasks and take actions based on goals defined by users.

E-commerce is becoming one of the most important use cases for this technology.

How Does AI-Powered Shopping Work?

Consider a simple example.

A user might ask:

“Find me a good coffee machine for a beginner under TRY 5,000. It shouldn’t be too large and should be easy to clean.”

In the traditional search model, the user might enter several queries into Google, open dozens of tabs, and compare products one by one.

With Agentic Commerce, AI can break the request down into specific criteria:

  • Maximum budget
  • Experience level
  • Product size
  • Ease of maintenance
  • Product category

It can then evaluate products against these criteria and present the user with a much more focused selection.

In Shopify’s model, AI agents can participate in different stages of the shopping journey, from product discovery and comparison to purchasing.

This means brands increasingly need to think not only about whether people can find their products, but also whether AI systems can understand their products.

From Search Engines to AI Assistants

One of the most important consequences of this shift is that the starting point of product discovery is changing.

Today, many e-commerce journeys begin with Google, Instagram, TikTok, marketplaces, or directly on a brand’s website.

Agentic Commerce introduces a new starting point:

A conversation with artificial intelligence.

Users can now describe what they need without knowing a specific brand or product name.

For example:

“Recommend decorative products for my minimalist living room in light colors under TRY 15,000.”

The user does not mention any particular brand in this query.

For brands, this creates a new question:

When AI evaluates this request, is our product included among the potential options?

This is where AI SEO and brand visibility in AI-powered search intersect with Agentic Commerce.

While AI SEO focuses on helping brands get discovered, Agentic Commerce creates a new environment in which that discovery can potentially turn into commercial action.

ChatGPT, Gemini and the Era of AI Shopping

As of 2026, this transformation has become an area of direct investment for major technology and e-commerce companies.

Through Agentic Storefronts, Shopify provides infrastructure designed to help products become discoverable across AI channels such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Search AI Mode, and Gemini. According to Shopify, eligible products can be distributed to these channels through Shopify Catalog.

On Google’s side, technologies such as Universal Cart and the Universal Commerce Protocol are bringing product discovery and purchasing closer together across Search and Gemini.

As a result:

Search → Website → Checkout

is no longer the only possible purchasing journey.

A new model is emerging:

AI Conversation → Product Discovery → Recommendation → Checkout

What Is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?

One concept we are likely to hear much more about as Agentic Commerce develops is UCP — Universal Commerce Protocol.

UCP is an open commerce standard developed jointly by Shopify and Google.

Its primary purpose is to enable different AI agents to communicate with e-commerce systems through a common framework.

It can cover different stages of the commerce journey, from product discovery to cart and payment processes. According to statements referenced in the original article, companies including Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, Stripe, Mastercard, Visa, Walmart, Etsy, and Salesforce are part of the broader ecosystem supporting the standard.

Think of it this way:

If merchants had to develop a completely separate e-commerce integration for every AI platform, the ecosystem would quickly become extremely complex.

UCP aims to establish a common communication standard between AI systems and commerce infrastructure.

Why Is Product Data Becoming More Important?

Perhaps one of the most important issues for brands in the Agentic Commerce era will be product data.

When a person visits a product page, they can interpret a great deal from the visual design, photographs, and written content.

AI systems, however, need information to be as clear and structured as possible in order to compare products accurately.

For example, a product listed simply as:

“Premium Table Lamp”

does not provide the same level of data quality as a product whose material, dimensions, color, intended use, price, variants, and stock availability are clearly defined.

Shopify also highlights clean and structured product data as one of the foundations of Agentic Commerce readiness. Shopify Catalog is designed to structure product information in a way that AI channels can query and understand.

This means product data quality, which has long been important for e-commerce SEO, is no longer relevant only to Google.

It is becoming increasingly important for AI-powered product discovery as well.

Will Agentic Commerce Replace SEO?

No.

On the contrary, SEO and Agentic Commerce may become increasingly interconnected.

For AI to evaluate a product, it first needs access to reliable and understandable information about that product.

This means product descriptions, category structures, technical SEO, structured data, brand authority, customer reviews, and accurate product attributes remain important.

What changes is the scope of optimization.

The traditional question was:

“Can Google understand this product?”

Now another question is being added:

“Can AI systems match this product with the right user request?”

How Should E-Commerce Websites Prepare?

Preparing for Agentic Commerce does not mean rebuilding your entire website.

The first priority is having a solid e-commerce foundation.

Clear product names, original product descriptions, properly configured variants, accurate price and stock information, understandable category structures, and well-structured product attributes are all good starting points.

For example, instead of listing a fashion product simply as:

“Oversized Shirt”

providing structured information about its color, material, fit, available sizes, and intended use can help AI match the product with more specific customer requests.

One of the key principles of Agentic Commerce will be:

Don’t leave important product information buried only within visual design. Make it accessible as data as well.

Agentic Commerce for Shopify Stores

Shopify is one of the platforms moving particularly aggressively in this direction.

With its 2026 Spring Edition, Shopify expanded UCP- and Catalog API-based Agentic Commerce capabilities across its developer ecosystem. Developers can build new agentic shopping experiences extending from product discovery through checkout.

Shopify Catalog transforms product information into a structured product pool that AI systems can query.

Shopify also reports that AI searches powered through Catalog deliver a 2x conversion rate compared with AI searches based on scraped page data. Because this figure comes from Shopify’s own platform data, it should be viewed as an indicator from within the Shopify ecosystem rather than an independent industry-wide benchmark.

These developments suggest that Shopify should no longer be viewed simply as:

“A platform for building online stores.”

The platform is expanding toward a commerce infrastructure where products can be discovered across different AI experiences.

What Will Agentic Commerce Change for Brands?

Until now, brands have primarily relied on several major channels for digital visibility:

Google SEO, Google Ads, Meta Ads, social media, influencer marketing, email, and marketplaces.

None of these channels are disappearing.

But another channel is being added:

AI Commerce.

In the coming years, e-commerce managers may increasingly ask questions such as:

Can our products be discovered by AI systems?

Can AI accurately understand our product attributes?

Why are competing products being recommended instead of ours?

How many visitors are coming from AI platforms?

How much revenue is generated by AI-driven traffic?

A few years ago, these questions were rarely found in standard e-commerce reports.

Now they are gradually becoming real performance metrics.

Is Agentic Commerce an Opportunity or a Threat for Small Brands?

Agentic Commerce does not have to be a technology that only large brands can benefit from.

In fact, it could create new discovery opportunities for smaller brands with strong digital infrastructure and high-quality product data.

Instead of asking AI:

“Show me the most popular furniture brand.”

a user might say:

“Find me a modern walnut TV unit suitable for a small living room under TRY 20,000.”

In this scenario, brand size is not the only factor. How closely a product matches the user’s criteria also becomes important.

This could create meaningful opportunities for e-commerce brands with niche products.

However, for this to happen, AI must be able to understand the product’s characteristics accurately.

Will Websites Become Obsolete?

One of the more exaggerated claims surrounding Agentic Commerce is that websites will become unnecessary.

There is not enough reason to assume this will happen in the near future.

A brand’s website remains central to product information, brand identity, content, user experience and, in many cases, the purchasing process.

Moreover, in Shopify’s current Agentic Storefronts model, purchases through some AI channels can still be completed by directing users to the merchant’s store.

What is changing is not the importance of the website, but the ways users reach it.

Users once primarily arrived through Google.

Social media and advertising platforms were then added to the mix.

Now AI agents are becoming another route.

What Can Brands Do Today to Prepare for Agentic Commerce?

The most useful thing brands can do today is not try to predict which AI shopping platform will eventually dominate.

Instead, they can strengthen their core digital infrastructure.

Organize your product data.

Standardize product attributes.

Complete missing product descriptions.

Improve your category architecture.

Resolve technical SEO issues.

Review your schema markup.

Make sure stock and pricing information is accurate.

Create clear and consistent information across the web about what your brand does.

Because regardless of which AI shopping platforms become dominant, clean, current and structured commerce data will continue to have value.

E-Commerce’s New Customer: Human + AI

Perhaps this is the simplest way to understand Agentic Commerce.

Until now, we have designed e-commerce websites almost entirely for humans.

Now we need to prepare our products for two different readers:

Humans and the AI systems acting on their behalf.

People want high-quality photography, trustworthy design, fast websites, and clear content.

AI needs to accurately understand what a product is, its attributes, its price, its availability, and which customer needs it can satisfy.

Successful e-commerce infrastructures will increasingly need to serve both.

How Does Reactio Approach the New Era of E-Commerce?

At Reactio, we don’t view e-commerce projects simply as designing a store and launching it.

We approach Shopify development, technical SEO, web performance, product data structures, custom applications, and API integrations as interconnected parts of the same digital system.

Agentic Commerce makes this approach even more important.

Because the e-commerce infrastructure of the future must not only be easy for people to use; it must also be structured in a way that search engines and AI systems can accurately understand.

Today, the question is:

“Are our products visible on Google?”

Tomorrow, another question will be added:

“When a customer asks AI for a product recommendation, is our product among the options?”

That may be one of the most significant changes Agentic Commerce brings to the world of e-commerce.

Digital Products. Real Growth.
